Today we are going to talk about this common verb in ENGLISH, which is GET!

Get is a very common verb using in espokene English! Get has many different meanings and is used in many idioms.

Do you know some meaning of get?

LET ME KNOW, before we dive into this topic!

The first use of this verb is to arrive.

It would be

1)GET+ PLACE= ARRIVE

When you are using GET with a place, it gives the similar meaning to arrive

How did you get at home?



What time did you get here?

The best way to learn all the different meanings of ‘get’ is to use them daily!!

2) GET + NOUN= RECEIVE, TAKE, OBTAIN, GET plus a noun (like an object)

We can use “get” with a noun. This basically means “take,” although a more accurate word for this would be “obtain.”

“Right, I’m going to the kitchen to GET SOME TEA.”

I got a new computer

(GOT) PAST = I received a new computer (the meaning is the same)

I am going to get some summer clothes: this means some object is going to come to me( in this case the meaning is a little more like buy)



When are you going to GET your new car?

We GOT A NEW TELEVISION for the sitting room.

3) GET PLUS ADJECTIVE= ‘BECOME’

We commonly use get + adjective

SOME ADJECTIVES


Get mean to ‘become’ or to describe a change of state or situation:

-Don’t talk about his nose. He’ll get really angry.

-Did you see her? She got so serious when we started talking about giraffes.”

-I think I am getting sick

You can use become in all of this sentences but it sounds way too formal!


4) GET WITH COMPARATIVES

-She is getting more BEAUTIFUL

( I know already but thanks)


-Your English is getting better.

5) MOVING ON TO THE NEXT ONE

GET: BRING SOMETHING

-Hey, get me a drink

-Like please bring me a drink!!!

-Can I get you a cup of tea?

6)GET WITH PASSIVE TENSES

-To talk about UNEXPECT situations or surprise situations!!

· My cellphone was stolen (SO SAD)

By adding more strong to this sentences you can say

MY CELLPHONE GOT STOLEN (LIKE SHOCKED) (LIKE UNEXCPENTELY)

-I got accepted to a really good UNIVERSITY (THIS IS A HAPPY SITUATION)

Our car GOT stolen last night.
